2014 Collide/Escape posterThe 6th annual Lester Bangs Memorial Reading honors the music and the subversive rock ideologies embodied by groundbreaking gonzo music journalist Lester Bangs. “Collide/Escape," directed by Kristopher Apple, features an intermedia performance of poetry, narrative, instrumental music, sound design, and interactive video, by artists Christian Kjeldsen, Rachel Merfalen, Ariana Warren, Chris Warren, and GC alumni Marisol Benter and Stephen Silke.

 

Lester Bangs Walk of Fame plaque

Lester Bangs, a 1968 alumnus of Grossmont College credited for coining the terms "punk" and "heavy metal," was honored in 2008 by the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Foundation and the English Department with his own bronze "Walk of Fame" plaque in the college's Main Quad.

Local San Diego novelist Tammy Greenwood is the author of eight novels and a grant recipient of the Sherwood Anderson Foundation, the Christopher Isherwood Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and, most recently, the Maryland State Arts Council.

 

Bodies of Water book coverHer novel, Two Rivers, was named 2009 Best General Fiction Book at the San Diego Book Awards, and her book, Grace, was the San Diego Book Awards recipient in 2012. Five of her novels have been BookSense76/IndieBound picks.

 

Her eighth and most recent novel, Bodies Of Water, was released in October 2013.

New Voices: A Student Reading

In a traditional end-of-semester tribute to its rising stars, the Grossmont College Creative Writing Program rounds out the Fall 2014 semester with a reading and performance of original poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, drama, and other unique, evocative, and sometimes provocative forms of literary and spoken word art. The event is always a personal favorite for students and instructors.
