UMOJA 

UMOJA (Ooo-Mo-Jah) is a Kiswahili word originating from the Continent of Africa meaning Unity. UMOJA is a California statewide program designed to engage and support Black and African American community college students (all students are welcome in UMOJA). The Grossmont College UMOJA Program is a critical student resource which provides students with exciting learning communities featuring amazing professors, financial assistance, and other student services such as Black College (HBCU) Tours for participating students.   While students do not have to enroll in our UMOJA Course Offerings to meet with our campus’ UMOJA Academic Counselor and participate in the UMOJA Program, students are highly encouraged to enroll as our UMOJA Classes are designed to ignite our students’ inner excellence and help them realize that people from their backgrounds belong and are needed as leaders in our academic and professional world.

COUNSELING (COUN) 130: 

 

Hear from Special Guest Speakers from the Professional Worlds of Business, Nursing, Education, Engineering and so many other industries! These guest speakers will share their experiences as people of color working their way into, and thriving in before mentioned professions. The UMOJA COUN 110 Course will also help students improve specific professional skills such as interviewing skills, resume writing skills, interpersonal communications, salary negations and so much more! ENGLISH 120 (ENGL) 120:


This first semester transfer-level composition course is designed to develop critical reading and writing skills for academic inquiry across disciplines. In this course, students will read, discuss, and analyze the choices authors make and the strategies they employ to influence how audiences think about the topics of a text. Students will be invited to explore culturally relevant texts representing diverse viewpoints. Based on analysis and evaluation of these texts, students will compose essays, documented research papers, and other types of writing for various purposes and audiences. This written work will demonstrate effective and logical expression of ideas, totaling at least 5000 words.

 

 

HISTORY (HIST) 180: 

 

Black History DID NOT begin with slavery in the Americas four hundred-plus years ago. Learn about Black and African American History from Black Perspectives with awesome UMOJA faculty ready to help students explore Black History and the African Diaspora! 

 

 

COUNSELING (COUN) 120: 

 

Time Management and Study Skills are important skills to develop as students endeavor to transfer to Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs), UC Schools, CSU Schools, and other great institutions across the globe. "My name is Abenazer Albe I am an Aerospace Engineer major and I'm going to be Transferring to SDSU fall 2018. I'm also a NASA Ames Research Center (Silicon Valley). My first year at Grossmont wasn't easy, I had to  find myself and dropped  classes I because I thought they weren't fitting to where I was going toward to . Eventually i got  to know people through the city, campus and this UMOJA program in general to help me grow as an individual and find my calling. The way I got my NASA internship at Silicon Valley I prepared for years  with this UMOJA program by meeting different people everyday also having a good reputation around to boost my market.A great resume as well with both academics and sports even though going hard past with some high school issues. But now I got my head out of the clouds and focused on a right path to where i belong.  In the future one of my dreams is  wanting to build a future Fortune 500 company right here in San Diego.

"What has Umoja done for me? I think a better question is what hasn't Umoja done for me. When I first started at Grossmont, I was going through the motions. Taking classes on a whim because I thought I needed them. However, when I joined Umoja, they gave me a direction and a vision. I was like a boat without a rudder; I was moving, but I was not moving with direction. Umoja gave me the direction I needed. I received thorough counseling, and the counselors took a genuine interest in my education. They invested in me emotionally. I was able to talk to counselors on a much deeper level than any general counseling appointment. Also, I have been able to go on many University trips and network with successful lawyers, doctors, and other professionals within my field of study. I strongly recommend anybody and everybody to join. You cannot go wrong with Umoja!"
