New Horizons
Welcome to the New Horizons program! We are dedicated to helping students achieve their goals and create new opportunities for themselves and their families. Our program is unique because we serve students who are in vocational majors, also known as career technical education. We accept applications year round.
- Dedicated counselor for all your needs (ie. education plans, financial aid petitions, individual semester plans, advising, and so son. )
- Equity grants if program has funds
- Major and career exploration counseling
- Connection to campus and community resources
If you meet any of the criteria below, you are eligible to be a New Horizons Student:
- Single, pregnant woman
- Low Income student - recieving benifits
- A single parent with over 50% custody of minor child
- Permanently disabled (Receiving SSI or SSDI)
- English Second Language (ESL) Learner
- Displaced homemaker
- Not worked in labor force for 3 years, but worked in home providing unpaid service to family members OR
- Dependent on income from a family member or public assistance, but no longer receiving that assistance OR
- Unemployed/under-employed and experiencing difficulty obtaining/upgrading employment
- If you are unsure on whether you qualify for New Horizons, please do not hesitate to contact the office found on the services tab on the left
- Please contact the CalWORK's department to be added to the list via the CalWORKs virtual front desk or call (619) 644-7552
- Our department will call you to scheudle an ORE and fill out an application.

My name is Sandi Duraid, and I love working with CalWORKs student population. I have been with CalWORKs since 2019 as a counselor. I have a Master’s in Education with concentration in counseling from SDSU as well as a Bachelor’s in Psychology and minor in Counseling and Social Change. I am also certified in Trauma Informed Care.

My name is Theron Page CalWORKs Adjunct Counselor. I majored in Sociology at UC Berkeley and obtained my Master’s in Higher Education Counseling from Point Loma Nazarene University. I have always had a passion working with students and CalWORKs has allowed me to do it.
