What's POCR Buy-In?
Established in Fall 2023, Grossmont's POCR Buy-In program at Grossmont was designed to help participants apply POCR-aligned DesignPlus templates to asynchronous online courses. Incorporating best practices in online teaching, the templates help instructors begin to align their courses to criteria in the CVC/ OEI Course Design Rubric. This rubric was developed to establish standards in course design that promote student success and conform to existing regulations.
POCR Buy-In is an excellent preparation step for the POCR course review process. At the completion of the program, we encourage participants to review their courses, make additional changes as needed, and submit the course to be quality badged via the POCR Review Process.
Participants get:
- Development course container with pre-loaded templates
- Five guided HyFlex workshops
- Instructional videos in a Canvas course
- One-on-one time and office hours with our POCR Trainers
- Suggested target dates to manage workflow
Who's on the team?
Our Buy-In Team has four aces: Dr. Jeanette Calo, Grossmont's POCR lead; Dawn Heuft, instructional designer; and Felicia Kalker and Dr. Beth Kelley, our dedicated POCR Buy-In trainers.

-
"Your clear communication of expectations from the very beginning provided a solid framework for our learning, enabling us to navigate the course with confidence and clarity."
-
"The course structure was well-organized and easy to follow, which helped me stay focused and motivated… Compared to other online courses I've taken, this one stands out for its emphasis on fostering sense of community and facilitating meaningful interactions among participants. Overall, I found this course to be both informative and engaging, and it has set a high standard for my expectations of online learning courses."
Advice from Buy-In Participants
Past participants have offered these tips to potential players:
- "The videos and zoom sessions were very helpful and the one-on-one time was essential. It was great to do little bits over many weeks, but also to have flexible deadlines."
- "Embrace the process. You will work hard, but you will learn amazing things that will be incredibly useful for ALL of your future courses. The time you invest now will pay off with big rewards later."
- "Stick with it and ask for help early if instructions aren't clear."
- "(1.) Try not to fixate on every detail. (2.) Focus on creating universal templates that will work well for YOUR class - it's okay to make changes to what's here. (3.) Find a Buy-In partner to support you with a lot of 'That looks awesome!' through the process."
- "Plan accordingly - it can be very time consuming. Reach out for help if style/formatting issues arise."
