Health Professions Programs

The Allied Health & Nursing department offers general information for our health professions programs once a month during the fall and spring semesters. If you are newly interested in one of the professions listed below and would like to find out more, check back soon. Flyers for future Intro to Health Professions sessions will be posted here.

Cardiovascular Technology 

The cardiovascular technologist is the link between the physician and the patient by way of the sophisticated medical instrumentation currently utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

 

Nursing 

As defined by the American Nurses Association, professional nursing is the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual and high-risk health problems. The Associate Degree Registered Nursing Programs at Grossmont College prepares men and women for national licensure to practice professional nursing in critical, acute, chronic, ambulatory and home health care settings. Nursing science didactic is coordinated with laboratory experience in local hospitals and health agencies under the guidance of nursing faculty members.

 

Occupational Therapy 

Occupational Therapy is a skilled treatment that focuses on helping people of all ages regain, develop, or master everyday skills in order to live independent, productive and satisfying lives. Whether the individual is young or old, they engage in "occupations" such as learning, playing, working, or managing a home. Occupational Therapy provides services to those individuals with physical, emotional, or other challenges who are unable to carry out their daily living tasks.

 

Orthopedic Technology

Orthopedic Technologists are allied health professionals who assist Orthopedic Surgeons in the treatment of patients in a variety of health care environments. They are employed in hospitals, clinics and private practice offices.

 

Respiratory Therapy                                                    
Respiratory Therapists, also known as Respiratory Care Practitioners are allied health professionals trained and educated to care for patients in need of cardio-pulmonary support.  Respiratory therapists assess, use diagnostic tests to evaluate, treat, educate, and provide care to patients from birth until the end-of-life.  A respiratory therapist has probably provided you with care if you have or have ever had asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, suffered trauma, delivered a baby prematurely or by cesarean section, suffered a respiratory or cardiac arrest, or needed life support.

 

Telemetry/ ECG Technicians

Telemetry/ ECG Technicians are allied health professionals who operate electrocardiograph machines to provide data for diagnosis and treatment of heart ailments. Telemetry Techs are employed in hospitals, clinics, and private practice offices.

 


Hospital Day

Hospital day is a simulation experience where students from our allied health programs are brought together to care for a patient as an interdisciplinary team. Teams are comprised of students from cardiovascular technology (CVT), occupational therapy assistant (OTA), orthopedic technology (OTC), registered nurse (RN), and respiratory therapy (RT).  Each student completes a Pre-lab Assignment and pre-simulation survey.

The objectives of the simulation day are to demonstrate and learn 1) Values/Ethics of Interprofessional Practice, 2) Roles/Responsibilities, 3) Interprofessional Communication, and 4) Teamwork.

Health Professions Support Services- Lab Technicians
The Health Professions Technicians provide specialized support services for the Health Profession's programs of Cardiovascular Technology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Orthopedic Technology and Respiratory Therapy and to the Grossmont College community. They prepare labs, repair equipment, maintain supplies, and the Health Professions Audio-visual library.
